fibre and carbon fibre front ends
The best to date I have come across is Curleys who Minispares sponsered many years ago when racing minis. Deal with him direct as he still makes the stuff but is usually a bit slow. I am sure he has a web site

Christmas Goodies
A. Carbon fibre door cards (LUSH), B. Weber 40 DCOE on a decent manifold, A, should be realistic, I have a mate who makes carbon fibre components for a living and has promised these several times (might email him a link to this thread as another reminder). B, however is a little less realistic, I feel I must ditch the twin 1 1/4 SUs prior to the engine build as I feel that they will no longer suffice! I would like to add that at least item B would fit into a stocking (albeit an over-sized joke one). P.S. I think my girlfriend has finally realised how much I like minis. She was rooting through the latest MiniWorld the other day so she could make a list of gift ideas for me. I LIKE IT!!!

Push rods
Carbon fibre is increbily strong/stiff hilst the weave is complete. Any cutting in to the weave willresult in failure - i.e. chafing against the block/head. By elongation I mean in a fore/aft plane as the rod moves through its arc of operation. This is not easy to ascertain or correct. It is also why the 5/16, or indeed the 1/4 push rods are no longer made. Unless extreme lengths are gon to to avoid them touching the block/head, they will fail. Steel push rods will rub/bend out of the way for thousands of miles without failure. I use steel push rods. KC.

push rods
The holes in the block usually only need elongating. It depends on how mis-matched they are with the push rod holes in the head. Assemble the head to the block and look down the push rod holes using a small torch. The most common place for push rods to rub is at the head gasket level where the head meets the block. The reason for using carbon fibre push rods is that they are stiffer and lighter. A side effect is they are also less noisy. You can also use slightly tighter valve clearances as they expand far less than steel. KC

Where did you get your flip front from? it would be nice to know who sells the good ones and rubbish ones! I found a carbon fibre one at a show and this fitted fine, im not sure who its made by. Recently i worked with one from P&L minis. The only bit that needed trimming was the top of the wing near the scuttle. The line/gap wasnt quite right. Stay away from the one piece ones, they are a nightmare to fit.

cracking paint
Interesting point about the cracking paint. When i first fitted mine it would vibrate when the car was ticking over. I found some weird foam/padded tape and stuck it along the top of the wing, now the front shuts ontop of this very nicly, and stopped the vibrations. Perhaps because its carbon fibre, but it been on for over a year and nothing has happened to my paint.

removable front end
does anybody know a stockist with quality removable front ends. Iv seen the one piece GRP kits avaliable, however they look/fit crap, and the carbon fibre examples are a little too expensive. Any info that would point me in the right direction would be great!

front end
im in the process of fitting a carbon fibre front end Check out the hinges avaliable from P&L Minis. These bolt onto the front sub-frame and front valance. They work like gate hinges, so when the front is flipped forward you pull it to the side and it seperates. Hey-presto a removable front end! For the A-panels im fitting discreat s/steel bolts with allen key heads and nylon nuts. My arches will be secured in the same way and not cut in half by the seam. Although it will take me longer to undo all the stuff i dont find it a problem because i will not be removing the front as often as a competion car for example. Im hoping the end result will look as standard as possible, i dont want loads of pins sticking out everywere. The bonnet will be secured by a leather strap at the front and quick relese hinges. This means i can open it as usual for everyday stuff but remove it easily when needed.

Rover - Longbridge
I bet by the end of next week Tony Blair and Co. will have sorted something out for Rover. Its lucky for them that the election is coming up so quickly or they would be left to rot like any other private loss making company. Can you imagine what the new Mini wouldve been like if it had been left in the hands of Rover Group? A re-skinned Rover Knightsbridge with a Korean engine or similar. Dont forget the potential of the MG Mini version (standard, but with a giant spoiler, fake carbon fibre dash, and a fourteen inch exhaust!!!). Try being one of the forgotten 30,000 people who work in the supply chain providing parts for Rover in the Midlands, Im sure well be forgotten about!!!
